Museo Lapidario Maffeiano
Reduced Entrance Museum Ticket
The "Museo Lapidario Maffeiano", created in the heart of Verona in the mid-eighteenth century, is one of Europe's oldest public museum institutions. His name is linked to the Marquis Scipione Maffei, eminent Veronese scholar. The Museum was founded after more than thirty years of work, during which Maffei picked up hundreds and hundreds of inscriptions contained on the tombstones. The Museum Veronense is in fact a lapidary: the scholar would create a museum of gravestones, because he was convinced that the inscriptions, more than any other ancient artifact, were true "antiques talking", primary and irreplaceable source of knowledge of history, fragments of the past able to directly relate the facts to scholars, without the mediation of printed reproductions or printed transcripts.
